There is nothing better than a fresh, soft and fluffy towel to wrap yourself in when you step out of a lovely bath or shower. Due to the nature of the material, towels are only soft and fluffy while they’re new and eventually end up feeling rough caused by soapy residue. However, we have some easy tips for you to fix your towels and you only need a couple of things!
Firstly, it’s important to understand why towels become less absorbent and rough to the touch. The main reason is that you probably use the recommended amount of washing detergent which is about twice of what you actually need when you wash them, using fabric conditioner strips the fibers off your towel and makes them less absorbent.
Therefore, to maintain your towels it’s recommended to do a “towel refresh”. This is using a couple of products to restore your towels by removing all the soapy residue.
How to refresh your towels?
- Place your towels in the washing machine
- Add 1 cup of white vinegar in the washing detergent drawer (do not add any other products like washing detergent and fabric softener)
- Wash on a 90c wash cycle, it’s important to wash on a high temperature otherwise it will not remove all the soapy residue
- Once finished, you will need another wash but this time add 1 cup of baking powder and again a 90c wash cycle
- For best results, dry them outside or in your tumble drier. If you dry them indoors they won’t dry as soft due to humidity and air difference
How to wash your towels correctly?
- Place your towels in the washing machine
- Add only around half of the recommended washing detergent, you can still use fabric conditioner, but it’s not really needed
- Add 3 tablespoons of white vinegar into the drum of your washing machine
- Always use a HOT wash
- For the best results, dry them outside on a windy day
Your towels should now be softer, but it may take a couple maintenance washes to see the huge difference as it depends how bad your towels were and what kind of fabric they’re made of.
NOTE: different materials may react differently to the cleaning agents we have mentioned. Therefore, our tips should only be used as a guidance as it's based on research. Please seek professional advice before using or mixing cleaning products for health and safety reasons.
