September Cleaning Reset: 10 Jobs to Get Your Home Ready for Autumn

September has a funny way of making us look at our homes differently.

The summer holidays are coming to an end, children are heading back to school, work routines are returning and suddenly those jobs we've been putting off are impossible to ignore.

The windows have fingerprints on them. The skirting boards have collected their fair share of dust. The kitchen cupboards could definitely do with some attention. And somewhere, lurking behind the sofa, is probably enough crumbs to make a small snack.

Sound familiar?

Don't worry — you're not alone!

As a female-led domestic cleaning company, we know that keeping a home clean isn't simply about having a spotless house. It's about creating a home that feels comfortable, manageable and welcoming, without spending every spare hour cleaning it.

That's why September is one of our favourite times of year for a home reset.

Here's our practical September cleaning checklist to help you get your home ready for autumn.

1. Give your hallway a proper reset

Your hallway is the first place to feel the effects of autumn.

Coats come back out. Shoes get muddier. Umbrellas appear. Children bring leaves, grass and who-knows-what-else through the front door.

Start by:

  • Vacuuming or mopping the floor thoroughly
  • Cleaning skirting boards
  • Wiping doors, handles and light switches
  • Cleaning underneath the furniture
  • Washing or vacuuming doormats
  • Sorting out shoes that no longer get worn
  • Creating an easy-to-use space for coats and bags

A clean, organised hallway can make the whole house feel calmer.

2. Clean your windows while you still can

September is a great time to tackle windows before the wetter, darker months really settle in.

Don't just clean the glass. Give the frames, sills and tracks some attention too.

Window tracks are particularly easy to overlook, but they can collect dust, pollen and general outdoor grime over the summer.

And there's another benefit: clean windows allow more natural light into your home just as the days start getting shorter.

3. Don't forget your radiators

This is one of those jobs that is incredibly easy to forget — until you switch the heating on.

Dust can accumulate inside and around radiators during the warmer months. Giving them a good clean now means you're not blowing months of settled dust around the room when the heating starts working again.

Use a suitable duster or vacuum attachment to get into the gaps, then wipe the exterior once the radiator is cool.

Your future self will thank you.

4. Refresh your bedrooms

After a busy summer, bedrooms can benefit from a proper seasonal refresh.

Wash and change bedding, vacuum underneath the bed and pay attention to corners and areas that don't receive attention during your normal weekly clean.

September is also a good opportunity to:

  • Wash mattress protectors
  • Vacuum mattresses
  • Rotate mattresses where appropriate
  • Wash pillows according to their care instructions
  • Declutter bedside tables
  • Dust lamps, headboards and other overlooked surfaces

There's something particularly satisfying about getting into freshly cleaned bedding on a chilly autumn evening.

5. Give the kitchen a September deep clean

The kitchen tends to become the heart of the home during autumn.

Soups, stews, Sunday roasts and cosy family meals are on their way — so September is the perfect time to give your kitchen a reset.

Don't just clean the worktops.

Work through:

  • Cupboard doors and handles
  • Splashbacks
  • The hob
  • Extractor hood
  • Oven
  • Fridge shelves and drawers
  • Microwave
  • Bin area
  • Skirting boards
  • Floor edges

While you're there, check cupboards and the fridge for anything that's expired or unlikely to be used.

A little decluttering now can save you from hunting through an overstuffed cupboard later.

6. Pay attention to your bathroom's hidden areas

Bathrooms deserve a little extra attention as we head towards autumn.

As temperatures drop and homes become less well ventilated, moisture and condensation can become more noticeable.

Clean areas such as:

  • Shower screens
  • Shower seals
  • Grout
  • Around taps
  • Plug holes and drains
  • Extractor fan covers
  • Behind and around the toilet
  • Under the bathroom sink

Good ventilation is important too. Use your extractor fan and allow damp surfaces to dry properly after showers.

If you notice persistent damp or mould, don't simply keep wiping it away. Investigate the underlying moisture problem and seek appropriate professional advice where necessary.

7. Wash those summer soft furnishings

Summer means more open windows, outdoor activities, pets coming in and out, and generally more life happening around the house.

That means your soft furnishings may have collected more dust and dirt than you realise.

If they're suitable for washing, freshen up:

  • Cushion covers
  • Throws
  • Blankets
  • Curtains
  • Removable sofa covers

For carpets and rugs, September can also be an excellent time for a deeper clean while conditions are still relatively favourable for drying.

8. Declutter before you clean

Here's a little secret professional cleaners know:

It's much easier to clean a home when there's less stuff in the way.

Before tackling your autumn clean, spend 15 minutes in one room with three bags or boxes:

Keep. Donate. Bin.

Don't attempt the entire house in one go.

Try your hallway one day, a bedroom the next and perhaps the kitchen at the weekend.

September is naturally a good month for decluttering because we're transitioning from summer into a new season, with school and work routines beginning again.

9. Don't ignore the washing machine

Your washing machine cleans your clothes — but it needs cleaning too.

Detergent drawers, door seals and filters can accumulate residue, hair, lint and general grime.

Give the detergent drawer a thorough clean, wipe around the rubber seal and follow your manufacturer's instructions for cleaning the machine itself.

It's a small job that can make a surprisingly big difference to freshness.

10. Decide what you don't want to clean yourself

This might be our favourite September cleaning tip.

You don't have to do everything.

If you're already juggling work, children, school routines, family commitments and everything else life throws at you, spending an entire weekend deep cleaning the house might not be the best use of your time.

That's where professional domestic cleaning can make a real difference.

A regular cleaner can take care of the everyday jobs that keep your home under control, while a seasonal deep clean can tackle those bigger tasks you've been meaning to get around to.

Your September cleaning checklist

If you don't have time to tackle everything, start with these:

☐ Clean windows and window tracks
☐ Dust and clean radiators
☐ Deep clean the kitchen
☐ Refresh bedrooms and bedding
☐ Clean bathroom grout and shower areas
☐ Vacuum underneath furniture
☐ Wash soft furnishings where appropriate
☐ Declutter the hallway
☐ Clean the washing machine
☐ Clean skirting boards and doors
☐ Check for damp and improve ventilation
☐ Book any professional cleaning help you need

You don't have to do it all

At this time of year, there's often pressure to completely transform your home.

But a home doesn't need to be perfect.

It needs to work for you.

Sometimes that means spending a Saturday with a bucket and a vacuum cleaner. Sometimes it means doing one room at a time. And sometimes — especially when life is already busy — it means letting somebody else take care of it.

That's exactly why we're here.

As a female-led domestic cleaning company, we take pride in helping busy households enjoy a cleaner, fresher home without adding another huge job to their to-do list.

Whether you need a one-off deep clean, an autumn reset or regular domestic cleaning, we'd love to help!
