Dust mites are microscopic insects, with their largest populations living on upholstered furniture, carpets and mattresses. The mites feed on dead skin cells. 1 million mites can successfully feed on human skin, which falls off every adult every day. Although small numbers of these invaders are not very harmful, larger populations of dust mites can cause allergies and even asthma in humans.
Studies carried out in recent years by the US Asthma and Allergy Organisation have shown that dust mites and their droppings are one of the most common causes of allergies and asthma. Around 25 million Americans struggle with dust mite allergies, and studies have shown that 80% of asthma is caused by these insects and their droppings.
The main symptoms of allergies are sneezing, coughing, itching of the nose, skin, eyes and throat. It is probably not possible to completely eliminate dust mites from your home, but you can reduce or cure your allergy symptoms by limiting the number of mites in the following ways:
1. Wash bedding, rugs, cushions regularly at high temperatures. Add a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil with each wash - this helps remove 99% of mites.
2. Sprinkle diatomaceous earth on fabric furniture. Diatomaceous earth helps to reduce the insect population in your furniture. Diatomaceous earth is a naturally occurring substance made up of single-celled algae. After sprinkling this soil on your furniture, leave it for a few hours, or preferably overnight if you can. After the night, vacuum everything up. You can use this method every month.
3. Vacuum furniture, carpets, mattresses deeply. This is one of the most effective methods as the powerful suction can break the fabric and thus collect most of the insects and their waste. You can do this by buying a special vacuum cleaner nozzle, or you can call a professional cleaning company.
